Chaw, a Lollipop or a Sweet?

Laren in new zealand, whose mum uses the word chaw for a lolly or a sweet eg. And she's never been able to figure out where came from. So i need to enlist the help giles of the purple people, because i've never heard chaw used for what the americans would call a piece of candy and what we would call sweet. The other chaw is linked to the word char, meaning a turn of work or an odd job. If you've got chaw from char, is it possible you could have chaw meaning something to sweet? I'm just throwing it up as an idea. There may be some professor of etymology there who
