In 1944, the US fleet attacks the Pacific island of Saipan. Out of a force of 31,000 Japanese troops, 24,000 are killed in battle and 5,000 commit suicide. In Tokyo, the propaganda machine keeps the scale of defeat a secret from the Japanese people. But for the military high command, this cataclysmic setback triggers panic.
