The French Revolutionary Code Changed Everything

Property as we know it did not exist under the old regime. Hardly anything in france was owned by a single person. Even things that we to day would think of as part of the commonwealth were not owned by any one. The right to administer justice over a given jurisdiction, known in french as a seigneri, could be bought and sold on the open market just like a house or a piece of land.
