The Importance of Experience in the Novel

The novel in letters has been given the greatest praise by all of you. But very soon it loses intellectual respectability. Jane Austen's early piece called Lady Susan is written in letters, but she gets fed up with them. You can see that it has gone perhaps as far as it's going to go. To get anywhere else with the novel, you need to do two things. You need to invent free and direct speech, and you need to come back to story.
