The understanding of mortality and with it the temptation to escape arrived precipitately about some hundred thousand years ago in human history. At that critical juncture in prehistory when the idea of suicide first dawned just how vulnerable would our ancestors have been? Well as far as I know no paleoanthropologist has ever thought to ask but I'd say it's all too probable that these early humans would have been caught completely off guard. To start with at least they would have had no kind of immunity to suicidal thoughts. If then suicide were ever to have become prevalent it could have spread like measles in an unprotected population.
