Labour's Anxiety
At Labour Conference in Liverpool the other week, they were not relaxed at all. At least two people said to me, if we don't win this next election, we might as well give up. The terrain could not be better for them to fight on. But I was trying to work out why it feels different to me from 1997. It's like the difference was, you know, then the economy was growing in 1996 and public services were falling apart but there was money to fix it. You get the sense that if Labour came to power now, it would be inheriting some pretty scorched earth.
