A network effect is when a service becomes valuable to all users, including existing users. As more guests join the Airbnb platform, more hosts are able to get their rooms booked and make money. If you as a founder pay attention to whether your product has the potential to have network effects, it can really give you a market leading position relative to all the competitors.
