What Is the Gold Standard?
The idea of defining currency in terms of gold is one that originates in England. It spreads relatively slowly, and you still have a variety of different standards in the first half of the 19th century. And it's not until really after 1870 that there's this great rush to adopt gold. We call it a gold standard, but what we really mean is a pound standard.
