Insects, white blood cells can react and respond to their environment. So if you really adopted that type of sensory perception definition of consciousness, then you'd have to say there are millions of conscious beings circulating through our circulatory system at any given moment. It even flips the tables in a sense that if you take sensory input or sensory data as consciousness, then what leaves that to be the unconscious?
