The Ku Klux Klan Act of April, 1871

The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 made violence infringing on civil and political rights a federal crime. It was the first time crimes committed by individuals could be prosecuted under federal law. Hundreds were arrested, though only a few dozens served jail time. The Grant administration broke the back of the Klan and brought a fragile peace to the south.
