The Imperial Food Products plant in Hamlet had no evacuation plan, no fire drills and no sprinklers. Workers knew they risked being fired if they ever said anything so it wasn't worth complaining. Even the federal government had warned North Carolina that its worker safety program was putting workers in danger but nothing was done.
