Moses felt that his mission had failed and would continue to fail. The people hadn't changed; they'd taken refuge in the most absurd nostalgia for Egypt, he says. God comforted Moses by telling him not to be anxious about the people's complaint. In the next chapter, when his own brother and sister begin to criticize him, he reacts with total calm.
