James's Reaction to the Spanish Marriage
He wanted peace restored in Europe, and the palatinate restored to its rightful owner. The road to peace was not at the end of a pike as his daughter was suggesting. It was through the arts of diplomacy and the tradition cement reconciled enemies in marriage. James had blessed an army of 2000 volunteers as they set off for the Platenate under the experience commander Henry Veer with the Earl of Essex.
