Elyricum was a mountainous region. Throughout Greece and practically up to the Danube itself, there are no wide open plains. This meant that Elyricum bred tough, hardy people but struggled to produce enough food to feed them all. The area had always been a good recruiting ground for the legions because its young men couldn't be guaranteed a comfortable life on this narrow agricultural base. Owing to the poorest Danube frontier, Elyricum had suffered constant raiding for over a century now.
