Historically, lithuanians practised roman catholicism. This was not a good thing in the eyes of their new rulers. They saw it as a potential threat to their supremacy. So understandably, the lithuanian people wanted to hold on to their own culture. And they had a university system there. The resistance went on for such a long time. But if you fast forward about three decades, you see another mass of insurrection. And this is the back lash of this is what leads to the crackdown on the lithuania language itself.
