The Problem With Lying in Philosophy
The problem with lying tends to be that people are not very good at defending views when they're lying. And so as a matter of fact you don't want people lying in philosophical conversations. I think just because they won't be good interlocutors not because they're being evil. Could it also be a symptomatic of a weakness of will? Sure. To lie, because it's easy to do mean. There are lots of reasons why people lie. You know we rely on speech in order to coordinate our behavior with other people. We also rely on speech to acquire factual information and lying violates the norms underwrite both of those activities.
