The History of Egypt
After Mohammed Ali died in 1849 his sons and grandsons succeeded him as rulers of Egypt. They carried on his policies of reform making further improvements in infrastructure. The Suez Canal was built under Egyptian sponsorship by a French company in the 1860s. Also patronized Western art and architecture for instance commissioning the opera Ayida from Verdi to be performed at the Opera House in Cairo in 1870. So these rapid changes in Egypt then set again set the pace and set a model for the imperial government in Constantinople which laid the first telegraph line during the Crimean War in 1855.
