Augustine's Manicchism

Augustine embraced a variant of horizontal dualism that was popular in North Africa by the 360s and 370s. Manicchians taught abstinence and pure living, especially in appropriate diet, were keys to understanding their divine origins. They also held a view of Christ that's very unusual by today's standards. In the Confessions, Augustine disparages many aspects of Manicchism.
