The simulation hypothesis itself has been around for quite a while, not least in science fiction. Nick bostrom proposed this almost a decade ago and it's gotten more attraction now. Part of it is we're actually developing the technology for simulated worlds pretty fast. And from a certain perspective, it can suddenly start to seem quite probable that we are simulated beings because most beings in the cosmos will be simulated.
