The History of the Victorian Bathroom
The Victorians popularized the actual physical bathroom design many people in the West are familiar with. A flushable porcelain throne that you sit on in a small, isolated room was called a water closet. The absence of a water closet meant that you could very easily stigmatize people who went without as being inferior.
