The History of Faber's Machine
Henry Faber's machine ended up being a circus sideshow almost literally. He signed on to demonstrate his machine for PT Barnum in 1846. It had inspired at least one onlooker to start considering ideas for the electrical transmission of low bandwidth speech from one place to another.
