In 1976, I was in a school plate that made it to the finals of Singapore's National Drama Festival. The plate was called Paper Phoenix and was presented in the style of a traditional Chinese opera. We learned all of the movements from actual Chinese opera artists in Singapore. But we spoke the entire play in English. And as a scholar, I sort of reflected back and he tried to console your friends and family with this particular phrase: "The evil, mighty and strong be like the bamboo that bends but does not break"
