The Immediate Effect of the Declaration of Independence

The first printed reference that I could find of Jefferson's authorship is a sermon delivered in 1783 by the president of Yale, Ezra Stiles. It appears here and there, but it's really not until the election of 1796 when Thomas Jefferson and John Adams are now pitted against each other for independence. Robyn Curnow: In some ways, the Declaration of Independence functioned as a press release. And we know how inspired subsequent generations of abolitionists and civil rights leaders have been.
