The Somme River runs like an artery through British history. Edward III forced a crossing of the Somme before the Battle of Cressy. Henry V also had to cross the Somme and fought Agincourt on the north side. William the Conqueror sailed in that huge tidal estuary where it low springs, huge mud flats extend for miles. And now this river would see yet another generation of young men fighting against continental foe.
