Is There a Difference Between a Written and a Printed Document?
A lot of these documents in ancient greece would have been attempts to record spoken decrees or agreements. So even the first writing down of this probably introduces some changes. And so does an emphasis on perfect copying. But there's another thing that thomas mentions that struck me as really interesting about this different document consciousness. She points out that there waser an assumption common to many people classical athens, that in order to show that a document was no longer in force, the document was supposed to be destroyed or obliterated. This is interesting to think about, an i guess it's not without its parallels.
