The Value of Narratives
The reason we have narratives is to allow us to have these vicarious autobiographical experiences. Your life story is a narrative. Hearing about other people's stories are narrative. And the narratives that we're drawn to are the ones that allowed us to have experiences that would be difficult to have in the real world or don't really actually want to have it, but want to have the experience of it. So that's why we have the kinds of novels and films that we do.
