The idea of a perpetual salt fountain was first theorised way back in 1956. Professor Vaughan worries about the practicalities of making it work so far out at sea and at the scale sea fields is planning. She says there are easier ways to tackle climate change, such as protecting habitats that hold carbon like peatlands or coastal wetland areas. But she warns successful carbon capture could become an excuse for inaction.
