The name seems to be Parthian in origin and the region would have been dominated by an Indo-Parthians at this time period. While it appears that certain elements of the story were drawn from older sources like Magasthenes Indica or even T.C.S.,Philostratus likely used a well-informed yet unknown account dating to the first century A.D.
