The notion that Christ died only for the elect so-called selective atonement theory. The notion that God from all eternity wills that many be reprobate independently of or prior to their foreseen demerits so-called double predestination. A contrary interpretation of the Augustinian heritage is offered by Carl Bart and has echoes in various modern Catholic thinkers. Following a thesis of the 20th century French theologian Pierre Maury Bart inverted certain features of the Calvinist paradigm while maintaining others.
