The Three Prongs of Justification
The idea of original sin does reflect a historical reality. Sin was committed by Adam. Its consequences are detectable in us, both in our inborn corruption and in the inclination that we all have to sinfulness. Even saints, he says, cannot perform one work which if judged on its own merits is not deserving of condemnation. You can see the same thought in many of Luther's writings when he picks apart the secret motives of people who in the ancient past may have been virtuous.
