The Role of the Crown in British History

The post World War settlements were a horrible two settlements pretty unique because it's based on a bargain between the government and the people which was a kind of advanced social contract. The welfare state means you can't really go back much further but in to answer your question about what we need to come to terms with the most important thing is to stop thinking about British history as a story of kings and queens. We have some very colorful personalities in our history like Victoria and Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and Charles I first having his head chopped off and so on and so naturally it makes sense for many people to see history through that lens but it's actually very misleading.
