Shastakovitch's Quartete
The piece ends with one of the only firm groundings in d major. As this relentless, four minute long romp of bitter happiness or sweet sorrow finally calms down, we hear the dancers slinking away into the distance. Out of nowhere, the cor the prayer returns to me. This corral means the same thing each time it appears. It's a reminder, almost a talisman, of shostakovitch's true feelings that he was forced to hide all his life.
