Is There a Plot in Opera?

Miyazaki says we don't believe the melodrama we see on stage in opera, but we do believe what happens in movies. Ashley would say, well, that's plot. That's machinery. What you believe is story and story doesn't need plot. It could be told like by a mad aunt at your kitchen table or whatever could be told totally out of order. And so if things happen to you in your everyday life then that must be expressed in the form of a story.
