The MacArthur Surrender Ceremony
MacArthur had already established radio communications with Japanese headquarters in Tokyo from his headquarters in Manila, in the Philippines. He directed that a Japanese military and civilian delegation fly to one of the Okinawa islands, Aishima, and transfer to his personal aircraft on August 18th. The nuts and bolts of the surrender ceremony aboard the battleship Missouri were well understood. One of the Japanese planes ran short of gas and ditched in Tokyo Bay within yards of shore. But nobody was hurt and the surrender went ahead.
