What's Uncanny About Writing?

When I first started seeing the output of these types of natural language generation algorithms, what struck me was that there's something uncanny or creepy about it. So part of what's interesting here is that this is more or less exactly the terms in which Plato frames his critique of writing. And so what's uncanny about writing is that it simulates and at its best can kind of simulate the rhetorical effects of the human voice.
