The Origins of Poseidon

The name of Poseidon can be found on linear B tablets from Nausos and Pylos. In Homeric Greek, he is Poseidon and Potodion in the Doric dialect. When he does not stir up the sea with his trident, he strikes the rocks to well of water or to cause earthquakes. He was worshipped as phytomios or the god of vegetation and the growth of plants. There are numerous other sea divinities found throughout Greek myth,. but Poseidon was considered the chief god of all waters.
