The Phenotypic Plasticity of Individual Difference
The way to understand why species behave as they do and what potentials for other forms of behavior they contain is to understand the phenotypic plasticity that manifests as individual difference. We can see openness as a relevant dimension of individual variation across a wide range of species including humans, chimpanzees and gorillas. A tendency towards greater openness would seem to reflect a lifelong expression of a fairly universal life history stage of exploration in some cases.
