In ancient greece, aristotle warred against the pitfalls of laughter. In puritanical new england, a woman laughing could be downright dangerous. Women were advised not to laugh, that it was uncouth. Female characters in literature ranging from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century often engaged in laughter.
