Orwell's Definition of Nationalism
Orwell's definition is unusual, but valuable for its insistence on power and block labelling. Most interestingly, unlike power seeking nationalism, patriotism, he declares, is devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life which one has no wish to force on other people. Can we transfer it back into the ancient world? Patriotism was frequently expressed by provincial subjects of the roman empire. Upper class magistrates publicly dedicated statues of aphrodite, goddess of love, as symbols of their love for their home town.
