The Importance of Heeler Cells in Cancer Research

Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer in October 1951. The cells from her tumor were kept by the cancer unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. George Guy found that they could be grown indefinitely. Before this, cells cultured for laboratory studies would only survive for a few days. Sir John Byrne is professor of genetics at Newcastle University.
