No roman had been to britannia, so all they knew of it were from the greeks. It was a mysterious and other worldly place. As far as the romans were concerned, this was literally the edge of the world. Caesar's chosen moment of invasion was probably 56 b c e. He certainly had motive. In one stroke he could stabilize his provinces and add substantial power to his name.
