Hoyle gave up on the idea that particles of matter were continually created in a thin soup throughout space. In 1972, Hoyle resigned to his chair at Cambridge in disillusionment and became something very close to an alcoholic. Tucked away in a remote cottage in Cumbria, where he filled his days, fell walking, sniping at scientific establishment in court. He was the guy that explained stellar nucleus synthesis, how the elements are produced. And by the way, the steady state theory also couldn't explain the ratio of hydrogen to Hoyle to all the other elements.
