The Church Turing Thesis
There have been serious attempts to refute it and they have all failed other than Deutsche's own the quantum computer, which then got rolled up into a new version of the theory. The fact that that has happened makes the church Turing principle our best theory that there is in fact a jump to universality that takes place. There's actually four jumps of universality that have taken place in computational theory.
