What We Know About Roman Britain
In britain, the local elites had to really participate actively in building up this distinctive roman provincial world. It is nothing like a modern colonial city, where you would see, say, like a cosma in a north african city and then the local population is kept out of it. That's not apparently how roman provinces worked. The romans did sometimes still venture and take control, at least for short periods, certain areas. But they never really imposed control or had much knowledge of what was up beyond the antonine wall.
