The NYCHA vacancy rate as of April was about 3%, but there's a lot of discussion around exactly how many NYCHA apartments are vacant and for how long. As of February of this year, NYCHA has 12,613 employees and about 18% of them are public housing residents. Of the 528,000 or so New Yorkers who live in NYCHA housing of some kind, about 330,000 of those residents are in traditional public housing across all five boroughs. The authority also provides federal rental subsidies to about 167,000 residents through the section 8 housing voucher program used in the private market.
