What Is an Extracellular Signal Receptor?

A receptor is a thing that exists generally, not always but generally on the surface or on the external surface of the cell membrane. It will bind to and respond to the signaling molecule that has been produced by some other cell. Think of receptors as basically doors with a lock on them and the signaling molecule is the key. Two other big types of receptors are g protein coupled receptors and enzyme linked receptors. They're both proteins complexes that sit on their membrane surface in response to detecting their signal.
