The History of the British East India Company
The British East India Company was a joint stock corporation. It was the fourth of its kind, the first being the Muscovy Company. The company's initial charter from the crown in 1599 specifically authorised it to wage war. As with quite a lot of it's subsequent trade, it was done, but trade at the end of a bandit or a sword.
