Emily Dickinson wrote letters to her sister Susan, who was courting Austin Gilbert. The two women would live a stone's throw from each other for the next 30 years. It is hard to say how much this union was from affection and how much from convenience. Even as Emily became reclusive when she reached the age of 50, she would still write Susan love letters.
