The Effects of Vagus Nerve Stimulation on the Brain
When you stimulate the vagus nerve electrically, there's a pathway that goes again back up into the brain stem. It goes into an area called the nucleus tractus solitarius. That's where a number of really important nuclei exist in the brain. The locus ceruleus is tiny but has the most widely distributed network of neurons or projections into the brain. And so when the acetylcholine is released, it has the effect of calming down the microglial cells.
