The Benefits of an Open Thoracostomy
Open thoracostomy should be used preferentially if the expertise is available, says Jimbo. In trauma you do follow it up with a chest drain normally when they get to hospital. It's important to say that all of those options exist in hospital too for that immediate need for decompression. But we also have chest drains which seem clearly much less commonly used in the pre-hospital critical care nowadays.
